Yerevan mayor Karen Karapetyan has submitted his resignation, reports
local daily Joghovurd. According to the newspaper, Armenian President
Serzh Sargsyan urged him to wait a day, until the Paris mayor returns
to France and only then announce his resignation. According to other
reports, Karapetyan will announce his resignation on Monday.
As to what prompted this decision, the paper was unable to find out;
however, it offered two likely reasons: one, that the mayor has
problems with Serzh Sargsyan, since through his actions he has only
issued complaints in the public sphere, working against Sargsyan.
Second, simply that Karapetyan's Russian "friends" have invited
him to Moscow. The newspaper also asserted that Sargsyan wasn't all
particularly against Karapetyan's resignation.
The mayor's press spokesperson, however, denied such reports: "No,
there's no such thing." But sources, reports Joghovurd, confirm
that Karapetyan will be given a high position in Moscow and will
leave Yerevan.
