TWO ARMENIAN CHURCHES DAMAGED BY EARTHQUAKE IN VAN

The manager of Narekavank Tour Company Ashot Soghomonyan informed
us that the devastating earthquake in Van, Turkey, damaged Varaga
Monastery, one of the Armenian churches near Van Town, dating from
the VII century. Witnesses informed that the entry and the wall with
exceptional frescoes were ruined.
The Turkish Zaman Newspaper reported that the earthquake in Van
damaged the dome of the Armenian Saint Cross Church of Aghtamar Island.
The Turkish government had renovated the church in 2007 and established
a museum there. On September 19 of the past year the first liturgy
after renovation took place.
