YEREVAN. - Total amount of works carried out by Millennium Challenge
Corporation - Armenia made $177 million, said executive director
of MCC - Armenia Ara Hovsepyan, elaborating on the outcomes of the
program in a briefing on Monday.
According to him, $43 million was allocated for renovation of 17
pumping stations, $22 million for refit of 6 main channels with total
length of 40 kilometers, $16 million for repair of tertiary canals.
$20 million was spent on renovation of Ararat valley drainage system
and around $8 million for gravity-fed irrigation systems.
Around $33 million was put in Water to Market program, aiming at
improvement of marketing skills of farmers.
Millennium Challenge Corporation - Armenia was launched in 2006
and completed its program in September 2011. The program funded
by Millennium Challenge Corporation (USA) planned to allocate
$235 million to the maintenance of rural roads project, safe from
the ones mentioned earlier. However, in 2009 the component of road
construction was suspended due to Armenian authorities' actions that
do not correspond to the principles of democratic governance.
