A US cable leaked by the WikiLeaks claims that Georgian oppositionist
Nino Burdzhanadze's husband is collecting money from Moscow-based
Georgian mafia bosses through Armenia.
In the cable dated to September 2009 US Ambassador to Georgia John
Tefft, while referring to the activities of Burjanadze's husband,
former Deputy Interior Minister Badri Bitsadze, writes that there
is a lot of evidence that he collects huge sums from Russia-based
Georgians who are probably criminal authorities.
Vano Merabishvili, Georgia's Minister of Interior Affairs, said at
a meeting with Tefft that Bitsadze received most of the money from
Georgian criminal authorities based in Moscow through Armenia.
Merabishvili also said that Burjanadze and Bitsadze pay regular visits
to Europe where they meet with mafia bosses.
