Aghasi Abrahamyan was left lying at the medical station of the military
unit helpless for 10 hours, then he again underwent violence.
He got no medical aid. This is the most impressive part of the
description by the military prosecutor Gagik Kostanyan. Aghasi
Abrahamyan was beaten severely and was left to die at the military
unit of Yeghnikner on August 26.
The speech of the military prosecutor did not reveal the whole picture
of what happened when Aghasi Abrahamyan went on sentry duty. Nobody's
name was mentioned, but Kostanyan told the succession of events proved
by the preliminary investigation.
"We have two episodes of beating and violence at the battalion,
the injured felt bed, and lost consciousness and fell down. Some
time later he was taken to the military station which is 30 km from
the battalion. He was left at the medical station for 10 hours,
by preliminary inquest, without providing medical aid, to which the
episode of use of violence by the chief of the service of the medical
station added. In a few hours, the injured was taken to the military
hospital where death was reported," the military prosecutor reported.
According to him, one officer was remanded in custody and one
serviceman was arrested. The serviceman is charged with violation
of rules of conduct with servicemen, which is punished at 2 years'
imprisonment. The officer's charges are also mild, abuse of authority,
inaction.
Nobody is charged with murder. The conclusion of the forensic
commission on the cause of death will be published in two days.
We wondered if the command of the military unit will at least undergo
disciplinary action. Gevorg Kostanyan said it is possible.
"It depends on the extent to which the role or inaction of one officer
or another will be reasoned, which could have prevented the crime
or could help investigate the crime, we may consider it," he said,
repeating that everyone who is related to this case will be held
responsible, even for inaction.
Gevorg Kostanyan denied rumors that the president's godson is among
those guilty. He denied that anyone related to this case is in any
relationship to the president.
The head of the investigative service of the ministry of defense Armen
Harutiunyan told reporters that by the end of the day two suspects may
be arrested. According to Harutiunyan, the minister of defense held
a meeting today to discuss the reasons and conditions which would
enable committal of such crimes, to identify where the organization
of military service is poor.
