  • ANKARA: Decision To Return Property Of Minorities Assurance Of Tranq

DECISION TO RETURN PROPERTY OF MINORITIES ASSURANCE OF TRANQUILITY, SAYS COMMUNITY FOUNDATIONS REP. VINGAS

    Journal of Turkish Weekly
    Sept 7 2011

The Representative of Community Foundations in Turkey, Laki Vingas,
said Wednesday that the Turkish government's recent decision to
return the property of minorities was sincere and realistic and was
    an assurance of tranquility.

Speaking to the AA, Vingas said that "after the issue was widely
covered in the media, people in Turkey became aware of such a problem
of minorities. We are happy to see that efforts were made to solve
the property issue of minorities in Turkey".

The decision to return the property of minorities was an assurance of
a comfortable life in Turkey. It was an important step that helped
the minorities see their future in Turkey. It was also an important
step the did away with pre-conceived notions. The Turkish government's
decision on the return of properties to the minorities was a sincere
and absolutely realistic one, Vingas also said.

Meanwhile, Harutyan Harun Sanli, a member of the Armenian Community,
said that the Justice and Development (AK) Party's rule was a milestone
    for minorities in Turkey.

As non-Muslims, we had certain difficulties. We needed permission even
for placing a nail on the wall of a church. Such problems gradually
disappeared since 2003, Sahin also said.

Turkish government has recently issued a decree to return immovable
properties belonging to minority foundations in Turkey.

The decree was published in the Official Gazette recently to return
all immovable properties belonging to the minority foundations which
they declared back in 1936 including their cemeteries and fountains.

Minority foundations are obliged to make an official appeal within
12 months to reclaim their immovables.
