KARABAKH ISSUE'S IMMINENT RESOLUTION CONFLICTS WITH INTERESTS OF A SUPERPOWER - FORMER ARMENIAN NA SPEAKER

    news.am, Armenia
    Sept 8 2011

    YEREVAN. - The Nagorno-Karabakh (NK) problem's regulation in a
foreseeable future conflicts with the interests of one of the two
superpowers, which have a bearing on the South Caucasus, said former
Armenian NA speaker Tigran Torosyan during a conference today. The
event, entitled "New Approaches Toward the NK Issue," is devoted to
the 20th anniversary of NKR's independence.

"Under no circumstance should we observe that state as our opponent.

That country has its own interests and defends them, just like any
    other country," Torosyan added.

In his words, emphasis of the peace talks needs to be changed toward
the direction of NK's status. "The Kosovo issue showed that the
situation begins to come out of an impasse only in the case when
the status issue becomes paramount. When this matter was put on the
backburner in Kosovo and replaced by the strengthening of democracy,
armed clashes resumed. So, it is necessary to take into account that
status is the first issue that needs to be solved. And the rest are
its outcomes," former Armenian NA speaker concluded.
