Geographer and cartographer Grigor Beglaryan spoke about "correct"
and "incorrect" maps today.
"Many maps today present the territory of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic
within the borders of the former Autonomous Region of Nagorno Karabakh
. This is a mistake, since the current borders of Nagorno Karabakh are
different and are fixed by the Constitution of the Nagorno Karabakh
Republic, which declared its independence 20 years ago," he said.
To avoid incorrect mapping, it's necessary to take today's realities
into consideration, and establish state control of the sphere, Grigor
Beglaryan said. "The infringers should be subject to administrative
or financial punishment," he added.
Another problem Beglaryan spoke about is connected with the names
of geographical locations, particularly the cities of Alaverdi and
Akhtala. The settlements were called Pghndzahank and Artsatahang in
the past, but the local population refused to rename the cities in
a referendum, and the issue remains unsolved up until now.
