YEREVAN, September 9. /ARKA/. Government of Armenia approved the
strategic development program of hydropower engineering in Armenia.
The program is aimed at the regulation of the construction process
of hydropower plants (HPP) for reasonable usage of own resources of
renewed energy, study of technical situation of the existing HPPs
for the increase of their efficiency, as well as promotion of using
hydropower resources in the context of energy security in Armenia.
It is expected that additional energy capacities of 450 megawatt will
be created, opportunities of using own resources of renewed energy,
significant dependence of Armenia from imported hydrocarbon fuel will
be expanded, as well as the discharge of gas popping will be reduced.
It is planned to build three new large HPPs in Armenia, conduct
research of economically efficient potential of small HPPs, as well
as reconstruct and modernize Vorotan cascade HPP and Dzora-HPP.
As of today, Debed river with its tributary Dzoraget, as well as the
river Araks are not used in energy purposes.
Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC) proposed to be guided
by this strategy in regulating the sphere and implementation of
relevant functions.
As of March 1, 2011 there were 101 small HPPs in Armenia processing
electricity. Their total defined power was about 129.47 megawatt and
projected processing of electricity - about 409.9 million kilowatt-hour
a year.
In the same period licenses for the construction were provided to 74
small HPPs, which total defined capacity was about 140.6 megawatt.
