Rights activist comments on child killing in Ararat town

    11:20 - 11.09.11

Armenian rights activists Arthur Sakunts has said that there will be
more cases in Armenia when a parent kills his/her children, unless
there is a systemic approach to the issue.

Speaking to Tert.am about the recent killing in Ararat region,
Sakunts, who is also the head of the Vanadzor Office of the Helsinki
Civil Assembly, said: `We will still have such cases, unless systemic
    approach is implied.'

It comes after a mother strangled her two children in Ararat town
    earlier this week.

`Eventually, these children were under the mother's supervision. But
if the neighbors say that the mother behaved strangely recently, I can
pose a question: `Don't we have social workers that will support the
    family (nor control)'?' asked Sakunts.

Saying that the law enforcers have taken up the case, Sakunts,
however, noted that such cases must raise concerns in the society.
According to him, the point is that the human being in our country is
not considered as the highest value.

`This is not a philosophy; it is particularly so much materialized
that you face it every moment. This is a mania of destroying the
    personality,' said Sakunts.
