YEREVAN. - Uruguay's initiative to start Nagorno-Karabakh Republic's
(NKR) recognition process is positive and pleasing, but a serious
political revolution would not come about, Armenian MP and vice
chairman of the ruling Republican Party Galust Sahakyan said in an
interview with Armenian News-NEWS.am.
`I believe it would be good if with our diplomatic posture we, the
MPs, try to convince different countries to recognize NKR as a subject
of international law. This is our national concept, and, against this
background, Uruguayan FM Luis Almagro's statement is very impressive,'
Sahakyan noted.
In response to the question whether other countries of South America
and the world could follow Uruguay's example, Galust Sahakyan said:
`The processes will have to go in that direction at some point. But of
course that does not mean the states had not known that we were right;
simply, each state has its own interest. And if they leave the
confines of those interests, naturally all would accept. In general,
the formation of states has taken that road.'
As Armenian News-NEWS.am reported earlier, `I believe Nagorno-Karabakh
should be independent and, in time, unite with Armenia. This is the
only way to resolve the issue,' Uruguayan FM Luis Almagro had said at
the recent Uruguayan parliamentary conference on Armenia-Uruguay
relations.
Uruguay FM had stated also that Karabakh is a historic part of Armenia
and that Uruguay currently studies the case to formally recognize that
state.
Uruguay is also the first country to recognize the Armenian Genocide
perpetrated by the Turks.
