Suicides increased in Armenia due to sects? - psychologist

    September 10, 2011 | 19:38

YEREVAN. - The number of suicides has increased in recent years in
Armenia also due to the sects, psychologist Samvel Khudoyan told at
    the press conference on Saturday.

According to the psychologist, many sects inspire their followers with
guilt and fear for the peaceful world, scare them for the doomsday,
destruct them as individuals and motivate them for committing a
suicide. People suffering from mental disorders are also among risk
    groups.

The expert disapproved, besides there is no statistics, that majority
of the suicides are based on sects in Armenia.

`Such statistics is not conducted. However, the idea of self-sacrifice
is widely spread among sect followers,' the psychologist said.

According to the other participant of the conference, priest Babken
Hayrapetyan, church does not hold funeral ceremony for people
committing suicide. In previous times people committing suicides were
buried in a pit, face-to-earth, outside the cemetery.

`Church does not forgive those who commit suicide consciously,' the priest said.

Regarding how the church differentiates between conscious and
unconscious suicides, the priest said that if the person is registered
in the psychiatric clinic and commits suicide, this is unconscious.
However, there may be cases when the relatives insist that the suicide
was committed under affect, and it was not intentional. In this case,
church holds the funeral ceremony and warns the relatives that the
responsibility falls on them for the lie.

The psychologist intervened and added that all suicides are committed
    under affect.

World Health Organization (WHO) supported by the international
Association holds September 10 as the day of suicide prevention in the
world. According to WHO, the number of suicides gets closer to 1
million annually worldwide, and developing states lead the list.
Eastern Europe tops the ranking. A total of 30,000 people commit
suicide in Japan annually. Latin America and Muslim countries have
less figures, while Africa has nearly no people who commit suicide..
