'Armenians launched a campaign to counter Azerbaijan'.

It is not the first time that Armenians are trying to speak on the
issue of Azerbaijan's participation in elections for seat as UN
Security Council non-permanent member at different levels.

The statement came from permanent representative to Azerbaijan to
UN Agshin Mehdiyev while commenting on Armenian foreign minister's
remarks about Azerbaijan's participation in elections for a seat as
non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

'First and foremost, I would say for those who do not know that
until recently Armenia was the fourth candidate from our group for
this seat at the Security Council. However, realizing that they are
in no way able to resist Azerbaijan in the upcoming elections, the
Armenians decided to withdraw their candidacy. Perhaps, it was the
right decision on their part, because they had zero chances...' he
    said, Trend news agency reports.

Staying true to themselves, the Armenians were not limited to this
and launched a campaign to counter Azerbaijan, the envoy added.

'Permanent representatives of several countries have complained that
Armenians were trying to influence them so that they do not support
the candidacy of our country. We have also been told that official
bodies of Armenia also make attempts to blackmail some countries in
this matter. I can not help recalling lap-dog from Krylov's fables,
which, seeking to demonstrate its "power", starts barking at an
elephant, not thinking what it may end up with,' Mehdiyev said.

'Regarding the recent Armenian comments, one of the great men said
"nonsense is a gift from God, but one should not misuse it..." But
    Armenians have clearly overdone...

As far as I know no one in Azerbaijan has ever said that in case
of election we are going to represent there EU interests somehow,
or something like that. If Azerbaijan is elected to the Security
Council, our activities there will be based on national interests of
our country. This is a cornerstone of our foreign policy. Of course,
we will take into consideration interests of organizations in which
Azerbaijan has membership. This is Organization of Islamic Cooperation,
    Non-Aligned Movement, etc,' he said.
