Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman expressed Russia's attitude to
the decision of the EU on Trans-Caspian gas pipeline project. The EU
Council adopted the Commission's mandate to negotiate a framework
agreement with Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan on the Trans-Caspian
gas pipeline.
MFA Press secretary Alexandr Lukashevich stated that the states of the
Caspian Five (Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan)
agreed that the main activities in the Caspian Sea are decided by the
coastal countries. "Attempts of intervention in the Caspian affairs by
foreigners, moreover, on extremely sensitive issues for the members
of the Caspian Five are able to make the situation in this region
seriously hard", said the Russian MFA spokesman.
The EU asks Russia not to hinder the realization of the gas pipeline
project NABUCCO. This was stated by the European Commissioner on
Energy issues Gunter Ottinger, reports Deutsche Welle. Ottinger called
the European Union's access to Caspian Sea Region and Central Asia,
which holds the world's largest natural gas reserves, a key issue
for the EU. "If Moscow accepts the fact that the "Southern Corridor"
is inevitable, and that Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan have a right to
make independent decisions, the Europeans will have much more trust
in utility, as the gas", said Ottinger.
Recall recently the French intelligence has opened new gas fields
near the Azerbaijan Absheron Peninsula, which are highly assessed
by experts.
Also recall that in October, a visit by the French President Nicolas
Sarkozy is expected in the South Caucasus countries and among other
issues the issue of a pipeline under the Caspian Sea will also be
discussed.
The matter is unlikely to reach an open confrontation between Russia
and Europe, Moscow is likely to "accept", but Azerbaijan can ask
political dividends for Moscow's "disobedience", in particular,
on the Karabakh issue.
However, the West is ready for such a development - advance charges
were filed against President Aliyev in the non-democratic and human
rights violations, and "payment" for Nabucco may be that the West
would defer the charges for some time. Or it will threaten to make
a retaliatory move - to recognize Karabakh.
