ARMENIAN PRESS ON 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF ARMENIA'S INDEPENDENCE

In their Sept. 21 issues, Armenia's newspapers address the 20th
anniversary of Armenia's independence. The press highlights both
achievements and omissions of independent Armenia...
Aravot:
"What was the response to the first and second Armenian presidents'
decisions to take part in the celebrations? It was a mixed response.
Radical oppositionists may have been disappointed. Wicked tongues
may have been glad, saying, 'We have said they are brothers,
haven't we?' But national traditions are not established to be
perceived by present-day society alone. Rather, the aim is to put
an end to everyday stereotypes: people attending the parade on the
occasion on the 20th anniversary of Armenia's independence must say:
'our roops, our tanks, our presidents'."
Azg:
"A new generation - contemporary with 20-year-old independent Armenia -
has grown up. They cannot imagine anything but independence and their
being citizens of independent Armenia. As master, this generation can
be critical of their state's omissions, express their discontent with -
or speak with humor about - the lack of discipline and disorder..."
Yerkir:
"We failed to properly evaluate the historical chance created
by ourselves, as well as our two invaluable achievements, namely,
independence and two states, which we have been unable to consolidate
by creating a necessary politico-economic, moral and cultural basis.
We stopped at what we had and could not lose. We deceived ourselves
by believing it was sufficient. However, we relaxed our vigilance and
allowed a mechanism of self-destruction to start working inside of us.
At present, we are correcting our previous mistakes or dreaming of new
achievements. It slows down our progress. But we have no right to it;
otherwise, we may find ourselves behind the clock of history."
Zhamanak:
"Independence was not a gift for us. It was our achievement at the
cost of hardship and thousands of lives. Other peoples - even larger
than Armenians - are still dreaming of gaining independence.
Unfortunately, in comparing our losses and achievements over the past
20 years, we see as many losses as achievements."
Hraparak:
"A dependent state is nonsense typical of the previous ages. How can
a human being disregard independence or fail to realize and value
it? It would be tantamount to doubting the humans' reason and ability
to live and develop. Unfortunately, part of society is mistrustful
and doubts the idea of independence. It is our common disgrace."
