The celebration of the 20th anniversary of independence of Armenia
activated struggle for the independence. It sounds strange but Armenia
celebrating its 20th anniversary for the first time made a conscious
claim for absolute independence, equal relations with partners,
free from any subordination.
The participation of the Russian troops in the parade for independence
caused a wave of protest. It is notable that no political or civil
force has demanded withdrawal of the Russian military base from Armenia
or review of the condition of its location. There was no protest when
the Russian base got additional powers.
But since last August when the term of the Russian base in Armenia
was prolonged without any justification, Armenia has been stirred by
the discourse on the review of the role of Armenia. The civil society
was able to prevent the opening of the Russian schools, while the
Compatriots of Russia Program which "recruits" Armenian families to
migrate to Siberia got a strong backlash. On its 20th anniversary,
Armenia suddenly "discovered" its complete dependence on the policy
of the current Russian government.
Paruir Hairikyan says he is not anti-Russian, he is anti-imperialist
and has always acted against imperialistic encroachments, be it
Russian, American, or of any other foreign origin. "The Russian
imperialism does everything to leave Armenia without Armenians.
However, whenever a genuine democratic government is formed in
Russia, the country will change, and everything will be viewed in a
different light because this country is, in fact, our ally by nature,"
Hairikyan says.
Once there was the slogan "Forever with Russia". I think it must be
replaced by the slogan "Forever with forever Russia rather than the one
which is there now but may disappear tomorrow," Ashot Manucharyan says.
Headlines reading that Russia loses Armenia are found in the world
press more frequently. However, Russia is not losing Armenia, it
is losing the slavish sputnik and instead it can acquire a reliable
partner.
