ARMENIAN STATISTICS IN AZERBAIJAN SURPRISING - GERMAN MEZZO SOPRANO

News.Az interviews German-Azerbaijani mezzo-soprano, our former
countrywoman Liliana Seyid-Bussonville, who lives in Germany.
In your numerous interviews, you are mostly speaking about music.
However, it is also known that you lead a very active public life. And
you also actively observe the political events in your native country
Azerbaijan.
I am not a politician and not seeking to become one. But as an educated
person, I am interested and trying to watch including the political
news. Certainly, it is related to the Karabakh conflict.
The older you get and see everything happening to our common country
USSR, the more you understand that the Karabakh conflict was openly
falsified and exaggerated to the state of an armed conflict (with
all traffic implications) by definite political circles both inside
the big country and out of its bounds. Further national conflicts in
other countries of the former USSR just proved this fact. Unprincipled
political adventurers like Gorbachyov and later Yeltzin (together with
their supporters) made their smeary action and benefited from the
tragedy of millions of people. I remember well that representatives
of very different nationalities lived in friendship next to each other.
They divided each other into good and bad, but no national divisions
were ever observed.
During your European tours you have probably met Armenians. What are
their opinion about events around Nagorno Karabakh?
Unfortunately in both Armenia and far beyond it, there are definite
groups of people who try to benefit from creating an image of an enemy
in the face of Azerbaijan. As a result, Armenia has given birth to
a generation of people, who sincerely believe that his neighbor is
a devil.
All the same, I cannot say that absolutely all Armenians think so. I
have repeatedly met older Armenians from both Baku and Yerevan abroad.
They do not feel any hatred towards us. We communicated normally like
civil people. They all miss normal relations between our peoples,
they miss Baku and other Azerbaijani cities. These people are tired
of everything: conflict, hatred, economic problems and so on. These
people remember very many good moments related to peaceful Caucasus,
including to Azerbaijan.
Probably, most Armenians are really tired of the policy of their
authorities...
Certainly. For this reason, it is the high time for establishing
relations between ordinary citizens. The visits of cultural
delegations, sport events and so on.
I live on the border with France in Germany. You know that during both
world wars the losses among civilians were immense. And respectively,
mutual hatred. However, the Nurnberg process put an end to this. Main
military criminals were caught and punished. Israel is still searching
the rest and bring them to the court, since military crimes cannot
be outdated. Karabakh conflict and similar ones in other lands must
end with the similar trial of those who killed civilians, who started
this war and did not allow it to end.
A couple of years ago, I watched the annual carnival in our city.
German mummers were going together with French drummers, who came
from the neighbor city. It has become an old tradition. When looking
at the procession, my husband said: "Look, Germans and Frenchmen have
been the bitterest enemies just recently and now we are celebrating
the carnival and all are happy!".
I have to note that the relations of the once cruelest aggressor -
Fascist Germany and currently the democratic country-with its eastern
neighbors are currently wonderful. A great many of people from eastern
former socialist bloc moved for permanent residence or visit Germany
as tourists.
How do you see the conflict solution?
I think that the international tribunal dealing with investigation
of such conflict is needed. It is necessary. Punishment of criminals
who launch and blow such conflicts will sooth the civilians of the
hostile parties.
You see, despite the tragedy and the absurdity of this conflict, many
people have preserved friendly relations beyond their countries. The
number of Armenians currently residing in Azerbaijan is surprising,
though not so high compared to the pre-conflict period. Thousands
of Armenians live here. Thus, life shows that normal human relations
are possible and must be developed.
