GUNNAR WIEGAND CONGRATULATES ARMENIA ON 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE

PanARMENIAN.Net - European Commission's Director for Russia, Eastern
Partnership, Central Asia and Regional Cooperation, Mr. Gunnar Wiegand
congratulated Armenia on the 20th anniversary of independence.
"We witnessed fantastic preparations for the anniversary and are
delighted that Commission's meeting is held on the eve of the
celebration," he told journalists on September 20.
The 12th meeting of the EU-Armenia Cooperation Committee is under
way in Yerevan.
With regard to EU-Armenia collaboration, Mr. Wiegand stressed that
there is considerable progress in talks on the Association Agreement.
"We will come back in October to resume the negotiations," he said.
"There are moves that need to be taken, particularly those of
legislative character. Once they are there we will be able to move
ahead," he emphasized, reminding that two years before they reached
agreement with the Armenian government on conducting a course of
reform to foster effectiveness of state administration. "We are on
the right track and are sure that those moves will be realized in
accordance with the schedule," Mr. Wiegand said.
