Ankara, 21 September: Turkish Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek on
Wednesday met with his Azeri counterpart Oqtay Asadov in the Turkish
capital, Ankara. Speaking to reporters after the meeting at the
Turkish parliament, Cicek said the Upper [Nagornyy] Karabakh issue
was a national cause to Turkey as much as it was to Azerbaijan,
adding that the relations between the two nations were strong to
defy all internal and external attempts to damage cordial bonds of
brotherhood between Turkey and Azerbaijan.
"Turkey has always expressed its rejection of unjust occupation
of Karabakh, which is a permanent topic on the agenda of Turkish
officials during their high level foreign meetings," Cicek said.
"Every country has relations with other countries but the relations
between us are special. As late President Heydar Aliyev aptly put it:
'We are one nation and two states.' There are no two other countries
that share such a meaningful motto," said Cicek.
Asadov, on his part, said Azerbaijan supported Turkey in its combat
on terrorism, which he said had caused great sufferings in his own
country. Asadov said Azerbaijan supported Turkey also in a row with
Israel over the Mavi Marmara incident in which nine Turkish nationals
were killed last year in May by Israeli commandos in a raid on a
Gaza-bound flotilla on high seas.
