CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF FREEDOM, 20 YEARS OF DEMOCRACY
Office of MP Harold Albrecht, MP for Kitchener-Coestoga, Ontario, Canada
Parliament Hill, Ottawa, Canada
Sept 21 2011
Republic of Armenia enters its 3rd decade
OTTAWA, ON (21 September, 2011) - Today Harold Albrecht, Member of
Parliament for Kitchener-Conestoga and chair of the Canada-Armenia
Parliamentary Friendship Group, offered congratulations to the
Armenian people and all Canadians of Armenian descent as the Republic
of Armenia celebrates its twentieth anniversary.
"When visiting Armenia, I was fascinated both by how far they have
come in twenty short years of freedom, and how young their democratic
traditions are," Albrecht said today in the House of Commons. "Even
the largest cities like Yerevan are a model of peace, cleanliness
and safety."
The Republic of Armenia was established on this date in 1991. The
Armenian people were emerging from decades of Soviet occupation,
and had suffered a genocide prior to that during World War I.
"Mr. Speaker, all Members of this House are here as the result of a
peaceful democratic process, governed by the rule of law," Albrecht
noted. "Too often, we take this for granted. Today, I invite all
honourable Members to join me in congratulating our Armenian-Canadian
friends, and our colleagues serving in the Azkayan Joghov, on twenty
years of independence, twenty years of democracy, and twenty years
of progress.
"Shenorhavor!! Shenorhagalem."
