The dream of Armenian people to be independent has become true 20
years ago. September 21st is the day of national pride - independent
Armenia is 20 years old today.
Armenian Declaration of Independence, passed on August 23, 1990,
declares:
"Expressing the united will of the Armenian people, aware of its
historic responsibility for the destiny of the Armenian people
engaged in the realization of the aspirations of all Armenians and the
restoration of historical justice; proceeding from the principles of
the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and the generally recognized
norms of international law; exercising the right of nations to free
self-determination; based on the December 1, 1989, joint decision
of the Armenian SSR Supreme Council and the Artsakh National Council
on the "Reunification of the Armenian SSR and the Mountainous Region
of Karabakh"; developing the democratic traditions of the independent
Republic of Armenia established on May 28, 1918; Declares the beginning
of the process of establishing of independent statehood."
Based on the provisions of the Declaration, the Parliament passed
a decision to hold a referendum on September 21, 1991, which would
define end of USSR rule and beginning of independence. The vast
majority of the population said "yes" to independence. Based on the
voting results the Supreme Council of Armenia declared independence
state on September 23, 1991.
President of Armenia has received numerous congratulatory messages
from different parts of the world.
Today, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Armenia's
Independence, a military parade will be held in the Republic Square.
Different festive events are scheduled to take place in the capital
city of Yerevan.
