ARMENIA HOLDS MILITARY PARADE DEVOTED TO 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE

At 0532 gmt on 21 September, Armenian First Television Network
(Public TV) started the live broadcast of the annual military parade
in Hanrapetutyun (Republic) Square in Yerevan devoted to the 20th
anniversary of Armenia's Independence Day.
[0532 gmt] Military units take their positions. The parade is steered
by the chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Col Gen Yuri
Khachaturov.
[0545] The masters of ceremonies announce the start of the parade.
Throughout the proceedings they speak about heroic military deeds
in praise of the Republic of Armenia, its history and the might
of the Armed Forces after Armenia gained independence. They also
praise services of post-independence heroes, like Monte Melkonyan,
Vazgen Sargsyan and others for their contribution to the formation
of the independent Armenian Army. The masters also talk about the
professionalism of the Armenian Army and latest achievements of the
country in the military sphere.
[0605] Defence Minister Lt Gen Seyran Ohanyan addresses the military
parade. He congratulates the forces on the 20th anniversary of
Armenia's independence. He offers special greetings to the personnel
of the Vazgen Sargsyan Military Institute, Marshal Armenak Khanperyants
Military Aviation Institute, Army, Guard of Honour of the Peacekeeping
Brigade of the Military Police, National Security Service Border
Troops, Police Force, Special Mission Brigade, the Russian military
base, the clergy working in the Armed Forces, Karabakh liberation
war soldiers, and students of Monte Melkonyan Military Academy.

for the military parade.
[0616] Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan addresses the parade,
congratulating on the 20th anniversary of Armenia's Independence.
Sargsyan goes back to 20 years, when Armenia separated from the
Soviet Union. Sargsyan praises the strong will of the whole Armenian
nation for gaining independence in very vulnerable conditions caused
by the 1988 earthquake, when the country was on the threshold of
Nagornyy Karabakh war. He praises free Karabakh, highly assesses
the services of the Armenian Army and volunteers in fighting for the
independence of Karabakh. He thanks engineers, Diaspora and others for
their patriotic efforts of building Armenia. He glorifies Armenia's
achievements during the past 20 years and urges to build a country,
which will meet the ideals of the Armenian nation.

missiles with 120 km of operational range.

up-to-date electronic equipment by Armenian experts.

Specially adjusted to mountain conditions, defence divisions armed with
S-300 are able to control the entire airspace of Armenia and suppress
any air attack. They can simultaneously destroy over thirty targets,
and, if necessary, hit surface targets.
