Armenia's President has misled the co-rapporteurs of the Parliamentary
Assembly of the Council of Europe on Armenia over the 1 March 2008
events, the mother of an activist killed during those events has said.
Speaking at the rally organized by the opposition bloc Armenian
National Congress on Liberty Square in Yerevan, Alla Hovhannisyan,
the mother of Tigran Khachatryan, said that the chapter of the 1
March 2008 events cannot be considered closed.
"Unless the perpetrators of the March1 events are held responsible,
the chapter of the March 1 cannot be considered closed," said she,
referring to the recent report by the PACE co-rapporteurs in which
they said that that case is already closed.
"The page of the March 1 cannot be considered closed, and our sons
will remain in the history as martyrs of freedom," said she.
The post-election unrest in 2008 claimed at least ten lives, while
many were wounded and dozens arrested.
Alla Hovhannisyan further said that before all those responsible for
the March 1 events are held accountable, no government official has
the right to speak about closing the chapter of the March 1 events.
"... Because that will mean to cynically ignore all the people,"
she said, adding that the parents of those killed during the unrest
have sent a letter to the PACE co-rapporteurs and Thomas Hammarberg
and High Commissioner for Human Rights at the Council of Europe,
voicing their criticism against that recent report.
Alla Hovhannisyan also said that they received a letter in response
which said that the co-rapporteurs will further come up with detailed
answers to the issue raised.
