ECHOES OF THE ERDOGAN-OBAMA MEETING
The ramifications continue of the meeting between Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan and US President Barack Obama in New York, the United
States.
A statement made by the White House has said that the point which
merits attention was the overlapping of views by both leaders that the
Assad regime is doing harm to its people and pressure on that regime
should be increased and that the overlapping of both leaders' views is
very important.
The White House National Security Deputy Advisor Ben Rhodes said that
the US believes the Turkish government to be a very important partner
in conveying the message that the Syrian administration should not
kill its own citizens.
Senior Director for European Affairs at the National Security Council
Elizabeth Sherwood Randall said that Turkey-Israel relations were
brought up at the Erdogan-Obama talks.
Obama expressed his wish for the strained relations between the two
countries to be eased and found a solution and made an appeal to both
Turkey and Israel to improve their relations, she said, adding that
the President also underlined the importance of easing tensions in the
region
Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall also said that Obama thanked Prime Minister
Erdogan for the steps taken in religious freedoms.
She quoted Obama as having said he would like to see the seminary in
Istanbul re-opened, and it is very important for the Cyprus issue to
be resolved and Turkey-Armenia relations to be normalized.
Meanwhile, the planned meeting between Prime Minister Erdogan and the
UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon has been postponed.
The Prime Minister's aides said the meeting between the two would take
place either today or tomorrow because of both sides' intense
schedules.
