Gov. Brown is among officials who present a gift to Sarkisian
LOS ANGELES-Governor Jerry Brown attended a luncheon in honor of
President Serzh Sarkisian Monday in the Bradley Tower at City Hall
co-hosted by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and City Councilmember Paul
Krekorian.
Saying that he was in the city where the largest number of Armenians
live outside of Armenia, Sarkisian thanked Villaraigosa and other
city officials for the warm hospitality and for their friendship with
all Armenians.
"Our friendship is eternal, and I am very happy that Armenian-American
relations have strengthened to a great extent in recent years. We
are a young democratic country, but we are guided by those ideals
for 1,700 years. And today, as well, our friend's assistance and our
potential help us secure progress in our country," added Sarkisian.
In congratulating Armenia on its 20th anniversary Mayor Villaraigosa
said in a statement that "as home to the largest Armenian population
outside of Armenia, Los Angeles is honored to be a sister city to
Armenia's capital, Yerevan."
"Our City's Armenian population has a proud, rich and enduring
heritage. We are grateful for the lasting contributions this community
has made to the economic and cultural growth of Los Angeles," added
the mayor.
"I'm honored to welcome President Sargsyan to Los Angeles as we
celebrate the 20th anniversary of Armenian independence," said
Councilmember Paul Krekorian in announcing the luncheon.
"Despite immense challenges, the Republic of Armenia has blossomed
over the last two decades in a region that is too often characterized
by instability, corruption and strife. Here, in Los Angeles, the
Armenian-American community has helped ensure Armenia's well-being
through unwavering moral support, generous contributions to worthy
humanitarian organizations and joint business initiatives aimed at
developing a robust economic infrastructure. Armenia's continuing
economic growth also offers great opportunities for business
development, trade and job creation here in Los Angeles. I'm honored to
recognize the efforts of so many across our city who've helped Armenia
through the years and to celebrate two decades of independence,"
added Krekorian.
At the luncheon, Sarkisian was presented several mementoes, among
them a direction sign to Yerevan!
Sarkisian left Los Angeles for a state visit to France, after which he
will travel to Poland to take part in the European Eastern Partnership
conference.
