An environmental commission has been set up at the Municipality
of Yerevan, Karine Danielyan, Chairwoman of "For Sustainable Human
Development" NGO, said at a press conference on Tuesday.
Danielyan confessed that some of her colleagues perceived this
initiative cautiously. "There are concerns that the work of the
commission will aim to legalize the existing problems. However,
I think that thanks to this work, we'll manage to change something
for the better", she said.
The expert said that today the environmental situation in Yerevan
is far from being good. Due to urbanization, the number of crows and
magpies is growing, while the number of oscines is dropping. "There
were 180 species of birds in Yerevan in the 1980s, whereas now their
number is 160-170. The problem of Yerevan is not only tree felling,
but also numerous cafes and their loud music, which depresses the
birds", Danielyan said. She added that in Armenia the protection of
green territories is developing into a fight against big money. "For
instance, it remains a mystery for me why the dismantling of pavilions
in Mashtots Park has turned into a nationwide issue", she said.
At the same time, Danielyan pointed out several cases when the
environmentalists' fight gave its results, for instance, the saving
of Shikahogh reserve from the program of construction of Iran-Armenia
highway and the return of Gilan territory to the Khosrov reserve.
