Azerbaijan has rejected a UK Foreign Office report about a terror
threat for tourists in that country, the website of Azerbaijani Public
TV, az.itv.az, reported on 10 April.
"Azerbaijan is the safest country in the region. Latest figures
show that there is a growing increase in the number of tourists in
our country. The Azerbaijani state provides high-level security
to the Azerbaijani people and foreigners," the spokesman for the
Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, Elman Abdullayev, said in an interview
with az.itv.az.
Abdullayev said terrorist attacks in Azerbaijan are only possible
in Armenian-controlled areas, referring to Karabakh and districts
around it.
The official said there is a "smear campaign against Azerbaijan"
because of the county's "strengthening position in the region,
its special geopolitical status... and its hosting of a number of
prestigious international events".
Abdullayev said "foreign forces are apparently using a cheap campaign
to try and cast a shadow on Azerbaijan's international image on the eve
of a very important event", referring to the Eurovision Song Contest
which Baku will host in May. He said that "biased and provocative
statements of this kind" also have to do with Azerbaijan's energy
policy in the region.
