TEZSHAR NEPHELINE- SYENITE MINE ANOTHER THREAT TO ENVIRONMENT

Armenia seems to have faced another environmental threat. That is,
development of Tezshar nepheline- syenite is risky for water resources
and protected areas.
Chairman of the Greens Union of Armenia Hakob Sanasaryan presented
project risks to ArmInfo and said that the most important of which
is the impact on Vorotan, Arpa and Darb rivers. The problem is that
wastes and dumps will directly affect mountain springs, the waters
of which flow not only into local brooks, but also through the whole
water system reach Ararat Valley. Dumps may reach even Sevan via
Vorotan River and Ketchut water reservoir. The polluted waters will
be used for irrigation in the towns of Yeghegnadzor and Vayk. There
are also waste of ore enrichment on the left bank of Vorotan, which
increases environmental risks for several times, he said.
Head of WWF-Armenia Karen Manvelyan said, in turn, that the mines are
located in the area of Meghradzor and Arzakan reserves and Hankavan
hydrological reserve.
"There are mountainous springs near the mine where brook trout is
produced and there are forests where you can still see beers, wild
boars, quails and rabbits," says Inga Zarabyan, head of EcoLur NGO.
However, our officials are apparently not interested in this wealth.
Now they are actively lobbying Tezhsar development project submitted by
"Alumina Corporation" LLC.
The project of developing Tezhasar nepheline- syenitic mine doesn't
have required documents; this was found out at the public hearings
"Alumina Corporation" LLC organized in Artavaz Village on 26 July. The
project documents don't include the agreement with communities on
land areas allocation. The appropriate license from Energy and Natural
Resources Ministry is missing as well as, while two communities don't
have any general plan for development, i.e. the communities still
don't have any borders set.
