IRAN APPLIED TO ARMENIA TO SAVE LAKE URMIA

YEREVAN
Yerevan, August 2, ARMENPRESS: Iran applied to Armenia to save Lake
Urmia from drainage. As "Armenpress" reports citing Eurasia Review,
the head of the organization of the Iran Environmental Protection
Muhammad Javad Muhamedzade stated this on August 2. To his word
water is expected to be transferred to fight against the lake's water
critical level.
Earlier, the Iranian authorities for the lake restoration projects
had planned to transfer water from Araks from the Azerbaijani side,
but the latter objected and the program worth 950 billion touman was
not implemented. Iran indicates that the lake drainage will lead to a
national environmental disaster, which will have its negative impact on
neighboring countries. The head of the Environmental Protection noted
that warm weather and lack of precipitation cause the lake to dry.
Armenia, however, does not officially approve this information. The
head of the Environmental Ministry of Water Resources Management
Agency Volodya Narimanyan mentioned in the interview with "Armenpress"
that there has been no conversation about transferring water from
Armenia. "We discussed water resource management issues with our
partners, as well as all the neighboring countries through the borders
of which the River Araks flows", Narimanyan mentioned.
The Armenian Ministry of Territorial Administration of the State
Water Management Committee has no information on the transport of
water in Iran.
