Two local Armenian churches again are holding special gatherings to
ask God's blessings and protection of this year's grape crop.
St. Paul Armenian Church is offering its annual Blessing of the
Grapes and Picnic on Sunday, Aug. 5, at California Armenian Home,
6720 E. Kings Canyon Road. The event starts with Divine Liturgy at
10:30 a.m., followed by the grape blessing at noon.
The Blessing of the Grapes ceremony is a centuries-old tradition that
is observed by Armenian churches throughout the world.
At the Fresno event, food is served 12:30-5 p.m., including shish
kebab, chicken kebab, kheyma and lulu burgers with pilaf and salad,
prepared by members of the congregation.
The Richard Hagopian Band will provide music for dancing throughout
the event. A backgammon tournament, bingo, a bounce house and games
for children also will be available. Proceeds go to St. Paul Armenian
Church mission programs.
Parking for the picnic costs $5, including two drink tickets per
vehicle. Details: stpaulfresno.com or (559) 226-6343.
