A national theater must not be constructed in Yerevan's main avenue.
According to the Yerevan master plan, the Underground tunnel or
station is to be located there, Mkrtich Minasyan, Chairman of the
Union of Architects of Armenia, told journalists on Monday.
"Fountains are located there. No problem if the fountains are
dismantled in constructing the Underground. The master plan does not
envisage any building in that place," he said.
"Some places in the same avenue were privatized. However, they have
not been used for so long a period that the government has the right
to take them back. A national theater can be constructed in such a
place," Minasyan said.
Several attempts to construct a trade center or a hotel in that place
have been made, he said and called on the public to "be masters of
their property."
With respect to urban development in Yerevan over recent years,
Minasyan pointed out the following principle: a free area is "filled"
without the master plan and Yerevan's future considered.
