Armenia may need Russia's help in restoring fisheries of Lake Sevan

Armenia may start buying from Russia whitefish eggs to increase the
fish population in Lake Sevan, said at a press conference Director of
Scientific Center of Zoology and Hydrology Barduh Gabrielyan.

"We have submitted the proposal to the Ministry of Nature Protection
of Armenia, as it was done in the 1920-30 and it is the only way
to restore the population of whitefish in the lake. Proposal should be
considered in the ministry," said Gabrielyan.

According to him, the state of fisheries resources of Lake Sevan in
the last four years practically became critical, due to the constant
poaching and lack of control over it, "News - Armenia" reports.

"In the early 60's the amount of fish resources of Lake Sevan was
10-11 thousand tons of fish, in the 1990 it increased to 30 thousand
tons, and in 2000 s the amount of resources fell sharply to 2
thousand. In 2010 it was 170 tons, and in 2011 just 8.5 tons, " said
    the director of the center.

Lake Sevan, one of the largest mountain lakes in Europe and Asia, is
located in the center of the Armenian highlands, at an altitude of
1914 meters. It is an important tourist attraction. In addition, the
lake is famous for its fish, especially trout.
