The Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA) has
released a statement warning the Turkish authorities against attacking
the Syrian Armenians and other peoples of the country and the region.
The statement says that any direct or indirect violation of the
security of the Armenian community of Syria on the part of Turkey will
see counter-measures. The hostile policy of the Turkish state against
the neighboring countries has reached its peak and has led Turkey to
total isolation in the whole region. The aggressive policy against
Iraq's integrity, direct military intervention in the bloody crisis of
Syria, continued blockade imposed on Armenia for more than 20 years,
ceaseless threats against the territorial integrity of Greece and
Cyprus and the coercive measures against the Kurdish people have
turned Turkey into a center of danger impending over the stability of
the region.
ASALA says that the policy of hatred, conspiracy and genocide against
the neighboring peoples will increase the enmity and hatred between
Turkey and the neighboring states. ASALA also expresses its solidarity
with all the peoples of the region and declares that the Arab people
will decide their destiny and shape their future themselves. These
people do not need the "crocodilian tears" and hypocritical care of
Ankara, the statement says.
To note, ASALA was formed in 1975 in Beirut, Lebanon, by Hagop
Hagopian. The stated intention of ASALA was to compel the Turkish
Government to recognize the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Empire.
Initially, the organization attacked Turkish diplomats to draw their
attention to the Armenian problem. Later on, ASALA organized a number
of operations against the representatives of western countries:
attacks on air companies' offices and attacks on the official
representatives of the countries keeping ASALA members in prison. On
August 7 Armenia pays its tribute to the members of ASALA.
On that day in 1982 Zohrab Sargisian and Levon Ekmekjian attacked the
Esenboga International Airport in Ankara. Sargisian was killed and
Ekmekjian was wounded and arrested.
