Fish reserves in Sevan down over 200-fold over 12 years

Fish reserves in Sevan were down over 200-fold over 12 years,
Bardukh Gabrielyan, Director of the Hydroecology and Ichthyology
Institute at the Armenian National Academy of Science, told media on
August 20.
According to him, fish reserves in the lake are estimated at 8.5 tons
while in early 80s there were 10,000- 11,000 tons of fish in the lake,
versus 28,000-30,000 tons in early 90s and 2,000 tons in 2000. Such
rapid reduction of fish reserves is a result of overfishing and
poaching. For lack of tough control over fishing and over the fish
markets, there is tangible decline in the population of valuable fish
species.
In addition, the efforts to increase population of the Sevan trout
have been brought to naught. Gabrielyan recalled that trout young fish
is released to the lake under a relevant governmental program, but
poachers deprive mature fish of an opportunity to lay eggs in the
rivers. As regards the white fish, its population is in a bigger
dander. Methods of artificial population of the given fish specie are
not perfect. "Our institute is ready to work to improve the existing
technologies, but we lack financing," he said.
The expert came out for a necessity to develop a comprehensive action
plan to stop reduction of fish reserves in Lake Sevan and revise the
current system of fishery licensing. Gabrielyan drew media attention
to the fact that fishers often fish more than they are licensed to for
lack of the necessary control.
