TURKISH EXPERT: ANKARA TO REVIEW ITS POLICY TOWARDS ARMENIA AFTER PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS 2014 IN TURKEY

One should not expect any changes in the Armenian-Turkish relations
before 2014, Mustafa Aydin, Professor at Kadir Has University
(Istanbul), told ArmInfo's correspondent.
He pointed out that one should not expect Yerevan to take any crucial
steps towards establishment of relations with Ankara before the
presidential elections 2013. The Turkish expert does not doubt Serzh
Sargsyan's victory at the presidential elections in Armenia.
Aydin said that the presidential elections in Armenia will be followed
by presidential elections in Turkey in 2014, and the incumbent
prime minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is the much-fancied
candidate. The expert thinks that before his election Erdogan will
also abstain from changing the course towards normalization of
relations with Armenia. But after the 2014 elections, one can expect
some changes in Ankara's policy with respect to establishment of
relations with Yerevan.
In the run-up to presidential elections, Erdogan has an image of a
severe, uncompromising politician, especially, when the matter concerns
Turkey's national interests, but after being elected president,
he may change his image and become more ready for compromises. The
expert said that Erdogan is a flexible politician and easily changes
his views in compliance with the changes in the political situation.
Aydin also stressed that the partner relations between Ankara and
Baku have a negative impact on the process of normalization of the
Armenian-Turkish relations. As regards the Safarov case, the expert
thinks it was unacceptable to pardon and glorify the Azeri murderer
Ramil Safarov.
Concerning the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire, Aydin repeated
the position of official Ankara, qualifying the events in early XX
century as "massacre".
