Construction in the area of the Yerevan Covered Market is illegal,
Head of the Union of Architects of Armenia Mkrtich Minasyan told media,
on December 4. He recalled that the project of reconstruction of the
Covered Market has not been submitted to relevant structures and has
not been approved yet, so any construction is illegal.
Minasyan said that the project may be ready by December 7.
Earlier today, residents of the residential building No.4 on Paronyan
Street appealed to the president and the prime minister with an open
letter demanding to tackle with the Covered Market problem. They
alarm of construction in the backyard of the market building, though
there is no approved project yet. They say that a new floor that is
planned on the building will distort the appearance of the Covered
Market and interfere with a wide view.
Earlier a joint commission set up by the Municipality of Yerevan and
the Culture Ministry has given a resolution on the partial demolition
of the Covered Market's arch roof on May 27. Late in the evening on
May 27 the major arcs and related structures of the covered market
collapsed following demolition of some inter-storey coverage.
Although the construction was suspended, liquidation of debris has
even deteriorated the situation.
To note, the Covered Market is included in the list of the historical
monuments of Yerevan. It was built in 1952 by Armenian architect
Grigory Aghababyan's project and has been considered one of the symbols
of the Armenian capital since then. Earlier the mass media reported
that Armenian MP Samvel Alexanyan had bought the Covered Market from
the Leader of Prosperous Armenia Party Gagik Tsarukyan and was going
to turn it into a Yerevan City supermarket.
