Armenia appeared in the center of the fight for influence between the
West and Russia, in which Russia is not the favorite. The possible
reason is that the Russia's demands to Armenia and the notorious
Eurasian Union are based on the personal ambitions of the current
Russian political leadership, which are presented as geopolitical
interests.
Why does the West want to absorb Armenia? It seems to be the same
geopolitical interest, but in this case we also deal with the
mercantile interest. Europe and America dwell on the development
of democracy, liberalization of the market and creation of equal
conditions of competition. They invest huge money in the institutional
reforms of Armenia, though they don't hide that the best way of the
reforms is the "investment expansion".
Investments in the IT sphere of Armenia can create a field of
competition and liberalize the economy. But the West does not hurry
investing in Armenia, while the existing investments flow to the
mining sphere.
Foreign investments in Armenia for the period of the first nine months
of 2012 amount to 391 million USD, which is 35.2% less than last year.
For the first time, the list of the major foreign investor states
is headed by Canada with 102 million. The whole sum is directed to
the metal mining. Switzerland recorded the biggest progress in the
investment sphere with 38.8 million which is 5.1 times more than the
country's investment in same period last year. The investments again
go to the mining sphere.
This proves that the West needs a democratic Armenia with free economy
and open borders to make the country a source of raw.
The government of Armenia does not comment on the decrease of the
investors, stating instead about progresses that Armenia records in
different international statistics. Besides, the government does not
hide that the extraction of minerals is a priority.
So, the government, with the excuse of Euro integration, just seizes
from Russia the subsoil of Armenia and gives it to the West. Normal
governments would try to seize some benefits at least. Sure if they
thought about the state, they would set quotas, considering the big
interest of investors in the mining sphere. Let alone that possibility
of coordinating the investments and directing them to other spheres,
such as the IT.
The fact that Western political figures support Tigran Sargsyan in
the office of prime minister is that he is a good partner who agrees
that his country becomes a big mine and a bank to be used for the
interests of a large group oligarchs and foreign investors, and not
the population.
