THE UNITED NATIONS: A SHOWCASE OF HOSTILITY TOWARD ISRAEL

With a global ruling dictated by urgent spending review needs,
the United Nations could be usefully closed down owing to manifest
uselessness. The UN makes the headlines every time it becomes necessary
to in some way humble and humiliate Israel (forgetting that the state
of Israel was born thanks to a UN partition that also included the
birth of a Palestinian state, which at the time was also agreed to
by Israel, but rejected by the Arabs). For the rest, every time it
comes to defending peace, or protecting some beleaguered population
against the effects of ethnic cleansing, or ensuring human rights,
then the UN disappears, or even turns over the jail keys to the
executioners. As when it entrusted Al-Qadhafi's Libya with heading
the Human Rights Commission, or Iran, forever fond of stoning women,
with the task of defending women's rights. Today it is tasking Turkey
with defending the greatly oppressed Palestinians. No one, however,
calls on the United Nations to account for how the Kurds are treated.
Keeping in mind that in Ankara one cannot even mention the massacre
of the Armenians.
The UN was absent in Ruanda, and if it was there, it simply displayed
its powerlessness. In Srebrenica the blue berets were there, but to
lift nary a finger to stop the bloodletting. The UN is not there, not
even via a communique, or a note of disapproval, or even a public show
of timid perplexity, when, in Pakistan, gangs of fanatics try to kill
some young girl, whose only fault is that of wanting to go to school.
The UN is not there when Christians are butchered in Nigeria. The
UN is not there when [Egyptian President] Mursi proclaims himself
a dictator. The UN turns its back on the youths who are again
protesting in Tahrir Square, nor does it make itself heard if the
Muslim Brotherhood subjects girls of the "Arab Spring" to undergo an
obligatory virginity test. The UN is not there to stop the killing
in Darfur. The UN is not there when China, in order to deter possible
imitators, bullies the families of young Tibetans who set themselves
on fire for their country's independence. The UN is not there when one
hears that, again in China, women workers are compelled to undergo
pregnancy tests ahead of possibly having to undergo a state-imposed
abortion. The UN is not there when, in the Burma of friendly and
courageous monks dressed in orange robes the Muslim minority is
persecuted. By definition, the UN is never there.
However, it is there when, in Durban, it is a matter of organizing
a convention against racism, which in turn becomes the most blatant
display of anti-Semitism under the aegis of the United Nations.
Shameful, utterly shameful. It is there if it wants to offer the
catwalk of the UN building to the delegations of the sundry tyrannies
scattered worldwide, and which unanimously condemn "inhuman" Israel.
In the latter case, in particular, it is always there. So, if we do
not want to abolish the UN altogether, then cuts should be in order,
limiting the UN general assembly to meeting and decrying Israel only
"twice" a year. Savings would be ensured, even if "the show must go
on." [preceding five words published in English in the original].
