FOUR PRIESTS WERE GIVEN THE CLERICAL RANK VERY REVEREND AFTER SUCCESSFULLY
DEFENDING THEIR THESES
On Sunday 16 December during the Holy Liturgy presided over by His Holiness
Aram I, Bishop Shahan Sarkissian delivered the staff to four priests to
carry as an expression of their new rank. Father Mesrob Sarkissian assisted
the celebrant bishop.
The candidate clergy had presented their academic research to a panel of
examiners from the faculty of the seminary, presided over by Catholicos Aram
I. In their research, each of the students addressed original topics of
bible interpretation and Armenian Church history:
Rev. Paren Vartania, "A commentary on the Arabic version of Mashdotz" the
Book of Rituals;
Rev. Vaghinak Meloyan, "A brief History of the Bible: from Genesis to the
martyrdom of Apostle Paul";
Rev. Masis Choboujian, "The Letters Catholicos Sahak received from the
Diocese of Antioch (1914-1938)", a commentary;
Rev, Sipan Kechejian, "Correspondence exchanged between Papken Catholicos
Co-Adjutor and Archbishop Ardavast Surmelian, (1932-1936)".
After commenting on each presentation, His Holiness Aram I said, "For our
church priesthood is not an end in itself, it is a journey rooted in a life
of prayer, intellectual curiosity and administrative tasks. Through such an
understanding of the priestly vocation, the Catholicosate offers spiritual
guidance to our people. Our church is therefore, a praying community,
because prayer was an inseparable part of Jesus' life. Our church is an
intellectual community, because our predecessors, whether monks or priests,
were historians and poets, who wrote and composed hymns. These two aspects
of the vocation of a priest are interconnected and inseparable." The
Catholicos concluded, "The presentation of your works demonstates that while
the number of our clergy is increasing so is its quality. This will
undoubtedly impact the way we shall transmit our Orthodox faith to our
people.
