JUSTICE SHOULD PREVAIL

Three months ago, Hungary allowed Azerbaijan to extradite an Azeri
soldier to serve the remainder of a life sentence he received for
killing a sleeping Armenian soldier with an ax. Both were participating
in a NATO program in Hungary when the pre-meditated murder occurred.
Upon arrival back home, the murderer was hailed a hero, did not spend
one second in prison but instead received a presidential pardon, and
was given a promotion. When questioned on this travesty of justice,
Hungary played dumb.
Now the two countries have inked a very lucrative deal that allows
cash-strapped Hungary to open a trade office in oil- and cash-rich
Azerbaijan.
The timing of these two events is clearly more than a coincidence. If
the European Union has any teeth, guts, or other relevant body parts,
it will investigate not only the trade agreement, but also the events
surrounding the extradition, then prosecute the proper parties, and
then cancel the trade agreement and return the murderer to Hungary
to finish his sentence.
There are a few things more important than money; justice is one
of them.
