No one believes in promises of free and fair elections except for
Armenia's leader, Sargis Tamazyan, a member of the Armenian National
Movement (ANM), part of the opposition Armenian National Congress
(ANC), stated at a roundtable on Thursday.
Mrs Larisa Alaverdyan, a Heritage party member, shares Mr. Tamazyan's
opinion.
With respects to heads of Armenia's communities, who are, with a few
exceptions, members of Armenia's ruling party, Hovhannes Sahakyan,
a member of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), said that, in
contrast to parliamentary and presidential elections, other political
forces do not place emphasis on local elections.
"Everything begins at the lowest level. If you do not want assume
responsibility at the community level, it is clear will are going to
have worse results at national elections," Sahakyan said. He accused
the ANM of withdrawing its candidate at the local elections in Spitak.
In response, Tamazyan said that any free and fair elections are out of
the question if people are dismissed for meeting with Sasun Mikaelyan,
an ANC candidate for the mayor election in Hrazdan. The opposition
candidate's requests for meetings with the workers are declined.
Moreover, the governor is openly advocating the RPA candidate Aram
Danielyan.
Tamazyan also said that the Central Electoral Commission has declined
the US Embassy's request to observe the Hrazdan elections.
In her turn, Mrs Alaverdyan said that she lost her hope for free
and fair elections after she saw the RPA MPs voting in parliament
on Thursday.
With respect to the claim that, during his visit to Hrazdan, Armenian
President Serzh Sargsyan tried to predetermine the election results
by supporting the RPA candidate Aram Danielyan, Sahakyan noted that
the Armenian president is also RPA Chairman.
