Having left the office of the U.S. Ambassador to Baku, Matthew Bryza
lives in Istanbul amd works in a commercial company. He has stated
recently that it is impossible to separate the process of normalization
of the Armenian and Turkish relations from the process of settlement
of the NKR issue.
To some extent, this has always been the reflection of the stance of
the U.S. politicians, administration functionaries which, however,
could not be expressed in diplomatic statements and real politics of
the U.S. until certain agreements were reached between the U.S. and
Turkey.
The United States, indeed, has achieved a lot in solving the problem
of returning Turkey under its control and within the scope of the
American interests. However, it was not only due to direct efforts
of the United States but also the Americans rightly calculated the
iteration of their tasks.
Turkey's regional policy or its regional expansion rather was a fiasco
not only due to the U.S. policy but also the position of most regional
countries surrounding Turkey. Ankara concluded that the confrontation
with the U.S. will be not only harmful but also impermissible, and
the deciding role in this was with the regional politics in which
the Armenian factor played an important role.
Hence, considering Turkey's concessions to Americans, it is impossible
not to take into account the Armenian factor. The U.S. needs, along
with levers of repression and control, to encourage its policy and
take into account its interests too. Matthew Bryza also issued his
personal stance, mentioning about the possible expectations from the
regional situation.
First of all, of course, it is necessary to take into account that
the administration of the Democrats in Washington is oriented towards
short-term, very short-term goals and objectives relating to the
upcoming presidential elections. Hence, it is necessary to patch up
the most glaring gaps including the failures in the relations with its
traditional allies. But the given situation when the Turkish-Armenian
relations are connected with the Karabakh issue means nothing else
but status-quo in the region, that is the political situation when
Turkey appears leashed by the U.S. policy.
The U.S. is facing the long-term task of Turkey's repression, and
the factors that can boost this should be strengthened. Because,
despite lots of evident "positive" results in the Armenian and Turkish
relations, nothing critical happened, and these relations are still
getting worse.
Anyway, the Armenian society will have to listen to Matthew Bryza's
statements, regardless his medium-term interim status.
