Georgian Ex-President Eduard Shevarnadze is concerned over demographic
situation in the country.
"The Georgian nation is on the verge of extinction and authorities
do nothing to encourage large families," he said in an interview with
the Asaval-Dasavali weekly.
Shevarnadze believes that Georgia is in the same position as in the
1930s, when the Georgians in the country were less than Armenians
and Azerbaijanis.
"Then, the first secretary of the Communist Party of Georgia was Kandid
Charkviani which took measures to remedy the demographic situation, so
he succeeded in that, but was accused of nationalism and removed from
office," he noted. "The authorities also led to nation's eradication
as a result of misunderstanding of the problem."
The ex-president sees billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili's coming to
power as a remedy to the situation.
"He is a pureblooded, true Georgian, and he will care of his nation,"
Shevarnadze said.
