President of France Nicolas Sarkozy is going to suggest European
countries to pass a law criminalizing the Armenian Genocide denial.
It is noteworthy that during Germany's EU chairmanship, the EU
member-states had already adopted conventions against racism, racial
discrimination, xenophobia, intolerance, and laws criminalizing
Holocaust denial.
Hurriyet reports, Sarkozy suggested a framework agreement between the
EU member-states on adoption of the given law. France has already
taken several steps in this dimension but European countries have
responded in no way so far.
Meanwhile, the Istanbul-based newspaper "Hurriyet Daily News" reported
that the Turkish ambassador to France, Tahsin Burcuoglu, has been sent
back to Paris on January 7 to "coordinate" Turkish efforts to prevent
the genocide bill's passage by the Senate.
President of France Nicolas Sarkozy approved the bill penalizing the
Armenian Genocide denial, passing it to the Senate for confirmation.
On January 10, the draft law will be debated by the Senate committee,
later by Constitutional Court to be placed on MPs' discussion agenda
on January 23-31. Afterwards, if approved by President the bill
signed into law.
The French National Assembly Commission for Constitutional Laws,
Legislation and General Administration of the Republic has passed the
bill authored by Valerie Boyer of the Union for Popular Movement (UMP)
by the proposal of several Senate members. The bill is criminalizing
the Armenian genocide denial, amends the law on freedom press
criminalizing, proposing a clause on racially motivating crimes. The
new bill stipulates one year in prison and a fine in the amount of
45,000 Euros for anyone who denies the fact of the Armenian Genocide
in the territory of France, which officially recognized the Armenian
genocide on Jan 29 2001, the French NA website reports.
