REPUBLICAN: SUGGESTION OF ARFD AND HERITAGE PARTIES SOUNDS LIKE ANTICIPATION OF THEIR LOST ELECTIONS

Suggestion of the ARFD and Heritage parties on transition to the
100% proportional system of voting sounds like justification and
anticipation of their lost elections, Gagik Melikyan, Secretary of the
Republican Party faction in the parliament, told media on January 13.

"The suggestion is belated for the upcoming elections, while it is too
untimely for the next ones. Such suggestions is a sign of elementary
    populism," Melikyan said.

Earlier on December 27 2011 the opposition parliamentary factions
"Heritage" and ARF "Dashnaktiutyun" have came forward with a joint
statement in which they called on the authorities to organize fair
and transparent parliamentary election, for which it is first of all
necessary to transfer to the 100% proportional election system. The
Armenian National Congress, Free Democrats, Shrjadarts, People's
Party, Ramkavar- Azatakan, National Democratic Union, Labor Socialist
Party of Armenia, United Labor Party, Democratic Party of Armenia and
many other political and civil groups and intellectuals welcomes and
    supported the idea.

Melikyan disagreed with the opposition's opinion that the authorities
will lose their voters after the elections because of heavy social
and economic situation in the country. "The people understand and
trust in the authorities and RPA is developing programs to improve
the situation in the country and justify the people's trust in it,"
Melikyan said. He stressed that RPA is already preparing for both
the parliamentary and presidential elections scheduled for May 6 2012
    and Feb 2013.
