The Armenian opposition will urge PACE co-rapporteurs on Armenia John
Prescott and Axel Fischer, who are to visit Yerevan Jan 16-17, to do
something to prevent the Armenian authorities from rigging the ballot
during the parliamentary elections in May 2012.
The oppositionists are ready to offer mechanisms for ensuring
democratic elections.
Particularly, the Heritage and ARFD parties have appeared with a bill
suggesting transfer to 100% proportional electoral system as a
guarantee of legal ballot.
In an interview to Azatutyun the head of the parliamentary group of
the Heritage party Stepan Safaryan said that they are going to
familiarize the co-rapporteurs with the 15 proposals sent by their
leader Raffi Hovhannisian to the President of Armenia and concerning
the composition and number of international observation missions.
The coordinator of the opposition Armenian National Congress Levon
Zurabyan says that the regime is going its best to ensure one more
electoral fraud in May. "In order to prevent this we need large-scale
international observation. International observers should change their
methods of work, otherwise, they will not be able to prevent frauds,"
says Zurabyan.
The ruling Republican Party of Armenia is of a different opinion. Vice
Speaker of the National Assembly Edward Sharmazanov believes that
there are all prerequisites for democratic elections in Armenia.
Substantial progress has been made in the judiciary, the electoral
code has been improved, the authorities are willing to conduct normal
elections. All this will be presented to the co-rapporteurs when they
come.
