History matters should be dealt with by historians, Council of
Europe Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland told reporters at a press
conference during the winter plenary session of the Parliamentary
Assembly of the Council of Europe that began on Monday, answering the
question of Armenian MP Naira Zohrabyan about the bill criminalizing
the denial of so-called "Armenian genocide."
"I can't express an opinion on this issue as a Secretary General of the
organization. I have always stated that we should not take political
decisions on historical events. History matters should be dealt with by
historians. The Turkish government offered to establish a commission
of historians to investigate the statements about genocide. Turkey
has also stated that it will acknowledge the recommendations of this
commission. I have no position on this issue," Jagland said.
Armenia and the Armenian lobby claim that the predecessor of the Turkey
- Ottoman Empire had committed the 1915 genocide against the Armenians
living in Anadolu, and achieved recognition of the "Armenian Genocide"
by the parliaments of several countries.
