YEREVAN. - From among Armenia's boxers solely Andranik Hakobyan (75
kg) has so far qualified for the 2012 London Olympics. He is currently
competing in Armenia's championship, and, in an interview with Armenian
News-NEWS.am, the experienced athlete said this championship is a
part of his preparation for the Olympics.
"Afterward, I plan to compete in the traditional international
tournament in Finland. We have many good boxers today, and therefore
all those who are included in the national team, and who compete in
the ranking tournament, have a chance to qualify for the Olympics. But
it will be difficult for the boys because the tournament will be
held in Turkey, and this country's boxers, if I am not mistaken,
have not yet qualified for the Olympics.
And if I head to London alone, I will do everything to compete with
honor. It is the tension, which was created around our team, that
will be remembered from [last year's] World Championships in Baku. Had
the tournament been in any other country, I definitely would have won
a medal. But they denied me the victory at the quarterfinals, since
the championship's organizers simply did not want for the Armenian
tricolor to be raised in the sports complex," Andranik Hakobyan said.
