RIGA, Jan 25, BNS - Latvia supports Armenia's progress towards
the European Union's (EU) values and the signing of an association
agreement with this South Caucasian state, Latvian Foreign Minister
Edgars Rinkevics told the press following a meeting with Armenian
counterpart Edward Nalbandian in Riga on Wednesday.
The two ministers discussed Latvian-Armenian bilateral relations,
including political dialogue and economic exchange in light of the
then Latvian President Valdis Zatlers' visit to Armenia in 2009 and the
return visit of Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan to Latvia last year.
It was concluded that there is still much work to do in developing the
bilateral ties. Nalbandian pointed to the common goals and interests
of the two countries, as well as stressed the need to continue the
dialogue both at the ministerial and parliamentary levels.
The Armenian foreign minister also invited Rinkevics to pay a visit
to Armenia, and the invitation was accepted.
Rinkevics said that Latvia appreciates and supports Armenia's adherence
to EU values and is for signing the association agreement between
Armania and the EU. Latvia is interested in expanding cooperation
with Armenia as part of the Eastern Partnership Agreement.
Rinkevics was also eager to hear the Armenian minister's position on
developments in Nagorno Karabakh, a landlocked region in the South
Caucasus, claimed both by Armenia and Azerbaijan, and the situation
in Iran, which borders with Armenia.
Nalbandian is also scheduled to meet with Latvian President Andris
Berzins and parliament speaker Solvita Aboltina during his visit
to Riga.
Nalbandian, who was appointed Armenian foreign minister on April 14,
2008, already visited Latvia in the fall of 2008 and in March 2011
when he accompanied Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan on his visit
to Latvia.
