A group of Azeri opposition activists held a protest action in Baku
near the French embassy following the adoption of a bill criminalizing
denial of the Armenian genocide by the French Senate.
An Interfax correspondent reports that over 100 activists from youth
organizations and political parties belonging to the Public Chamber
opposition movement started chanting slogans denouncing France's
decision and supporting Turkish-Azeri solidarity as they approached
the embassy building.
The police did not allow the protesters to come near the building
itself, but allowed them to read the protest resolution and submit
it to the embassy.
Earlier the police prevented another attempt to hold an unauthorized
protest outside of the embassy. The picketers were pushed to the
nearest park where they called for a halt to economic cooperation
between Azerbaijan and France. Among other things they called for
banning operations of French oil company Total in Azerbaijan.
Meanwhile, the council met with the Azerbaijani president for NGOs
on Wednesday to adopt a petition saying that the bill passed by the
French Senate is undemocratic and aimed not only against Turkey,
but against human rights worldwide.
In connection with this, the council said that after adopting the
bill France can no longer be regarded as an impartial mediator in the
Nagorno Karabakh conflict and must be stripped of these powers. "Due
to the French bias we demand that France be expelled from the OSCE
Minsk group of mediators," the message says.
